She is survived by her sister, Jannie Ten Berge Van Den Akker, nieces Martha Hoekstra and Linda Vander Naald, other nieces and nephews, as well as her adopted son Jai Mahtani and his wife Esther. She immigrated first to Canada and then the United States with her husband William Meerse after World War II. Gertie was born in the city of Bedum, Groningen, the Netherlands, August 7, 1924, to Derk and Seike (Bos) Ten Berge.
